WordPress 2.9 was released a week or so ago but I didn’t really have the time upgrade this and Talk Playstation. Well I can I’ve successfully upgraded to 2.9 on this blog and will do Talk Playstation next week.

Here are some of the features:

Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.

Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.

Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.

Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

For more information, head over to WordPress.

I’ve watched WordPress grow over the years and it’s always getting better and better. Each major WordPress update isn’t just a small one, the development team add a host of new features as well as fixes/tweaks. We are currently at version 2.8.6 as of writing this post and version 2.9 is on it’s way.

Here’s the lowdown on what I think are the best features:-

Image editing

Comment metadata

Trash status for posts, pages, comments and attachments (includes restore and permanent delete)

Add support for ‘include’ and ‘exclude’ to the gallery tag

What many people want are custom post types as they think WordPress isn’t a ‘real’ CMS. It is believed that custom post types MIGHT not make 2.9, but 3.0 looks likely.

I’ve decided to try and use Twitter for Talk Playstation. I bet your wondering what is Twitter? Well, Twitter is…

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

It’s a micro-blogging service that allows you to send and read other users updates, they are text based posts of up to 140 characters.

It’s a great way to communicate with your friends if your on the move.

So what i’ve done is signed Talk Playstation up to Twitter and everytime a post is made on the blog it will automatically post it to Twitter. Twitter is also good at being viewed on a mobile phone so i’ve used it for that purpose too.

If your not following Talk Playstation on Twitter, get following them!

I’ve personally tried Twitter but it is kinda time consuming and have no real use for it.

I’ve been having major troubles upgrading to WordPress 2.6. First of all it knocked out some of the plugins i use, namely Google Analytics, Robots Meta and Sociable. When i upgraded to 2.6 the settings for the named plugins got reset and i had to set the settings again. Not too much of a problem but pretty annoying. I’ve only upgraded talk playstation to 2.6 and i’m leaving this blog until i have a bit more time on my hands.

I had a play with wordpress 2.6 today and have to say its pretty good, it feels a lot faster for some reason and the new features are top notch.

If your wondering what plugins i’m currently using, i’ll make a new post during the week so make sure you check back!

While browsing for some WordPress Plugins i ran into a rather cool one. It’s called Content Gallery and basically it’s a new featured article ticker where you give it some articles to headline. It will rotate through the headline makers and allows the user to click through to read the full article. Another thing i like about this plugin is that its not flash or anything, its pure javascript/html/css or whatever.

I think this would work well on talk playstation. I will need to take a step back and look at the design because it will be pretty hard to implement in. At the moment i’m think it will go under underneath the top bar with the ‘popular posts’ etc.

This gives talk playstation a chance to highlight some of it’s best topics as well as displaying the top news for that moment.

Take a look at the plugin here.

No visual changes but new features are added and here’s the list:-

Post Revisions

support for Gears (speeds up working with the admin screens)

Support for the XML-RPC and Atom client APIs is turned off by default now. If you use an external client for posting, you’ll need to specifically turn these features on, under Settings/Writing.

Impoved support for SSL access to the admin screens.

When you are selecting themes, you now get to view a preview of how your site looks with the new theme before commiting to the change.

The return of the “Press This” bookmarklet (find it in the sidebar of the Write page). Drag the link to your browser’s bookmarks toolbar, and use it to quickly post about sites you visit.

More avatar options. The Gravatar service now supports displaying MonsterID, Wavatar, or Identicon icons in place of the default icon for those who don’t have a personalized Gravatar. These options are selectable under Settings/Discussion.

Improved plugin management. Active and inactive plugins are now listed separately. You now have the abiliity to “bulk activate” or “bulk deactivate” plugins. You can also delete unused plugins at the click of a button.

Thanks to dougal.gunters.org for the list of fixes.

I was looking for a plugin that would manage galleries/images better and in a more organised way and i found the perfect plugin that does this. NextGEN Gallery is the Gallery Plugin for WordPress you only need. Its simply brilliant, probably the best plugin i’ve used so far.

I’m not using NextGEN Gallery on this blog i’m using it for talk playstation because a lot of screenshots get posted and needed a more organised way of displaying images/galleries. If you take a look at talk playstation you will noticed that i’ve added a new slideshow in the sidebar. This is another neat feature of this plugin because it will randomly choose an image from the image folder and display it.

This adds more interactivity into the blog and in my opinions looks a lot better now. Also, i can now attach galleries to post so if we mention a game we can simply attach a gallery and say “check out some screenshots for this game”.

If you post a lot of images on your blog i’d highly recommend this plugin.

I’m looking at a few WordPress templates and i really like what i see Brian Gardner can produce. Why might i be looking at a new template? It’s not for this blog it’s for talk playstation. I feel it needs a magazine style wordpress theme.

I’m interested in the Revolution Magazine Theme it looks fantastic. I will probably buy this theme in the future and pimp out talk playstation. I’m not complaining about the theme i’m using now but i feel it needs that extra WOW factor to it. At $80 you can’t go wrong about the Revolution Magazine theme.

I would try and make my own but i just don’t have the time to sit and design/code a new wordpress theme from scratch so i’d rather take the lazy root and buy a professional theme.

Here is a good example of the Revolution Magazine Theme, take a look at Life in Fleetwood.

I only found at this morning that my videos over at talkplaystation weren’t showing in my RSS reader. I added talkplaystation to my RSS reader because one of my subscribers notified me that the videos i were posting weren’t showing in his reader.

So for most of the day i’ve been looking for a plugin that enables videos to be shown in RSS (please note that they show when you look at the feed in a browser but not in a reader). I struggled to find one so i thought feck it i’ll make one myself.

I got the YouTube videos to display properly and i’m working on getting Gametrailers.com displaying properly because i post quite a lot of videos on talkplaystation, i think i’m getting somewhere with this, you never know i might even release it as a plugin!

Add your blog to an RSS reader and see if it shows videos you’ve posted. I use Google Reader to subscribe to blogs.

When i started this blog i contacted my good friend Smemon regarding which digg plugin he used and he told me to try out Gregarious. It worked like a treat until i upgraded to WordPress 2.5, it pretty much destroyed the plugin altogether and the author doesn’t have time to update it.

Over the weekend i started to look for an alternative, i found 2 decent ones, A modified version of ShareThis and Sociable. You can’t see them on this blog but i’ve implemented both of them on my Playstation blog. I’m using the ShareThis plugin on the main pages as i don’t want to clutter the look of the design etc, i’m using Sociable on the actual post. Hopefully visitors will start using these new features = more exposure.

This is one of the updates for talkplaystation that wasn’t on the list.

So if your looking for some social bookmarking plugins i really recommend the above i mentioned.

I’ve just upgraded to WordPress version 2.5.1 with no problems what so ever which is expected because the 2.5.1 fixed bugs and a major security hole.

There is one thing i noticed is the fact that the backend is a little quicker and more responsive and they have fixed the uploader problem that i posted a week or two ago. The best thing about the new WordPress version is that new automatic plugin upgrade, it works like a treat if you run multiple blogs.

I woke up this morning to find that all my comments had disappeared from this blog and talkplaystation.com. This worried me straight away. I checked the database and they were all in there, so it couldnt be a sql problem. Then it clicked, i remembered that i had upgraded my plugins yesterday. Google Analytics for WordPress was the plugin that caused the problem and there was an update ready for me to download, i did this and presto! my comments were back.

I was terrified, but glad its back to normal now.

WordPress 2.5 has a great new feature called automatic plugin upgrade which basically upgrades your plugins automatically with a single click without needing to do it manually via ftp. For some reason i keep having to input my FTP details just before it’s about to upgrade. I’ve found a fix for this and i will tell you how to fix it below.

All you need to do is add the following code to your wp_config.php file:

define(‘FTP_HOST’, ‘ftp://example.com/’);
define(‘FTP_USER’, ‘example_user’);
define(‘FTP_PASS’, ‘example_pass’);
//Set to true if your host uses SSL connections
define(‘FTP_SSL’, false);

I got the above code from this site, but there is a mistake in the code the author put…

define(‘FTP_HOST’, ‘ftp://example.com/’)
define(‘FTP_USER’, ‘example_user’);
define(‘FTP_PASS’, ‘example_pass’);
//Set to true if your host uses SSL connections
define(‘FTP_SSL’, false);

Spot the difference? There is a missing colon at the end of line 1. I hope this helps some of you that are having trouble with having to enter your ftp details everytime you go to automatically upgrade your plugins.
